This is the easy version of my Mom’s Smothered Steak. I’m sure she made the gravy by hand, but I don’t have the desire or ability. I mean, I can make a brown gravy, but it’s not that great. I’ve been on the hunt for a method to make that really nice, rich, savory brown gravy. But I always fall short. I have started using Kitchen Bouquet in it, and that helps a lot. At least it has the right color. But I can’t make any gravy that comes close to Heinz’s brown gravy. I know. Sad. But anyway – this recipe takes just a few minutes to throw together – and can be made in a crockpot if you want.

Mom’s Smothered Steak
Recipe Type: Main
1 lb cubed steak (3-4 pieces)
1 jar Heinz Beef Gravy
1/2 cup flour
Mrs. Dash Seasoning Blend
1 onion, sliced
1 tbs oil
Mix together flour, salt, pepper, and seasoning blend into a plate. If you want to add more or less seasoning, feel free. I usually put in some garlic powder too.
Dredge cubed steak into flour mixture and brown each piece in a large non-stick skillet. You just need to brown it, no need to cook all the way through.
Place browned meat in a casserole and place onion slices over each piece.
Pour gravy over the whole thing. Add a little water – maybe half a jar – don’t worry the gravy won’t be watery. Make sure all the meat and onions are covered with gravy.
Cover tightly and bake in a 350 degree oven for 2 hours.
This steak will fall apart! You can also do it in the crock pot – just put the meat in, cover with onions and gravy and cook on low for 6-8 hours.
